Dave Randall: Our Uni Games started with a 90km road race in hilly terrain and forecasted wind and rain. The team planned to race aggressively from the start, and I broke away with 2 riders early, eventually working well enough to hold off the peloton. We rode hard and stayed together, but our chance of a win evaporated due to a flat tyre late in the race. I luckily held on to finish 3rd and watched teammate Cyrus Monk sprint to 5th. It’s always rewarding to put a team plan to action, despite some bad luck and a late storm! Tomorrow we head to Perth Motorplex for a time trial and hopefully extend our points lead in the cycling competition.
Brydie Clark: The nerves were just about tangible in the women’s bunch this morning before we rolled out for our first race of UniGames, a70km road race. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to get a course recon, so the first lap of four definitely proved itself to be an interesting one. Nothing was exceedingly difficult about the course, the roads were undulating with a few short pinches and some fast descents, but sure enough, sketchy road surfaces and spontaneous downpour made for a challenging race. I didn’t manage to stay with the lead bunch when one girl attacked up a climb, but was happy with my final position. My teammate, Flora, looked in form from the start and managed to stay strong, placing third and receiving a medal!
